Short explanation
Psono Server versions 3.1.0 through 7.2.3 do not consume the stored WebAuthn challenge after verification. An attacker who captures a user's password and a valid WebAuthn assertion can replay the assertion with the unchanged challenge to log in and bypass the second factor. The exploit works remotely without revealing plaintext secrets.
Bypassing the second factor weakens authentication and can lead to account compromise.
What should be done?
- Upgrade affected installations to version 7.2.4 or later
- Apply the patch referenced in the vendor commit
- Monitor for updates that correctly consume WebAuthn challenges
The sources give limited detail on some technical conditions. Review the chain of evidence below before deciding how to act.
Chain of evidence and sources
Show the technical text from the sources
Psono Server CE & EE versions 3.1.0 through 7.2.3 did not consume a stored WebAuthn challenge after assertion verification. An unauthenticated remote attacker who possessed the user's password and one captured valid WebAuthn assertion could replay that assertion with separate login tokens while the stored challenge remained unchanged, bypassing the WebAuthn second factor. The attack required capture of a valid assertion and did not itself disclose plaintext secrets.
