Psono Server allows restricted token escalation via device‑code claim

Short explanation

Psono Server 5.3.5‑7.2.3 permits a restricted token escalation via the device‑code claim. An authenticated attacker with a limited API‑key session can claim a malicious device code and gain a full read‑write session; this session may be valid for up to 365 days and bypasses the original token’s scope and lifetime.

Why does it matter?

The flaw lets attackers turn limited privileges into full control, enabling long‑lived sessions that can be used to manipulate data.

What should be done?

  • Upgrade to Psono Server 7.2.4 or later
  • Apply the fix in commit 19ed5a192c704fece1645d946b6f4c36045bacbe
  • Follow the vendor security advisory
  • Ensure token write‑scope enforcement is enabled
Note on uncertainty

The sources give limited detail on some technical conditions. Review the chain of evidence below before deciding how to act.

Show the technical text from the sources

Psono Server versions 5.3.5 through 7.2.3 used a permission class that did not enforce token write scope when claiming a device code. An authenticated remote attacker holding a restricted API key-derived session could claim an attacker-controlled device code and obtain a full read-write session valid for up to 365 days, bypassing the original token's scope and lifetime restrictions. This did not bypass two-factor authentication or directly disclose plaintext secrets.
