Short explanation
An improper access control vulnerability in LycheeOrg Lychee allows unauthenticated attackers to reveal the existence of private photos and modify their is_highlighted state when photos_star_visibility is set to anonymous. This issue is limited to non-default anonymous star-visibility configurations.
Unauthenticated users can guess photo identifiers to confirm the existence of private photos and alter their highlight status, compromising media confidentiality in affected deployments.
What should be done?
- Update Lychee following vendor advisories
- Review and adjust the photos_star_visibility setting
- Monitor vendor security bulletins and updates
Chain of evidence and sources
Lychee içinde photos_star_visibility ayarı anonymous olduğunda POST /api/v2/Photo::highlight isteği yetkilendirme doğrulaması yapmadan çalışır.
Kimlik doğrulanmamış saldırganlar tahmin edilen fotoğraf tanımlayıcıları üzerinden özel fotoğrafların varlığını ayırt edebilir ve durumlarını değiştirebilir.
Show the technical text from the sources
Lychee is a free, open-source photo-management tool. Prior to 7.6.1, when photos_star_visibility is set to anonymous, POST /api/v2/Photo::highlight can fetch and modify a photo without confirming that the caller can see it. BaseApiRequest::validateResolved() invokes SetPhotosHighlightedRequest::processValidatedValues() before authorization, and PhotoPolicy::canHighlight() returns true for anonymous callers without a canSee check. An unauthenticated attacker who can guess photo identifiers can distinguish existing private photos through differing success and not-found responses and can change their is_highlighted state, including for photos in private or password-protected albums. The issue is limited to installations using the non-default anonymous star-visibility setting. This issue is fixed in version 7.6.1.
