Short explanation

Forge, also called node-forge, is a native implementation of Transport Layer Security in JavaScript. Prior to 1.4.1, node-forge did not validate the AES-GCM tagLength option passed to start() during decryption through forge.cipher.createDecipher().

Why does it matter?

When applications derive tagLength from received data or use unconfigured values, it can lead to unauthenticated ciphertext being accepted, risking data integrity.

What should be done?

  • Follow the vendor advisory
  • Upgrade to version 1.4.1
  • Use a fixed valid tag length configuration
Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

Forge, sürüm 1.4.1 öncesinde forge.cipher.createDecipher üzerinden şifre çözme sırasında start fonksiyonuna iletilen AES-GCM tagLength seçeneğini doğrulamamaktadır.

TagLength seçeneğinin sıfıra dönüştüğü ve eksik etiket bulunduğu durumlarda decipher.finish yöntemi doğrulanmamış şifreli metni kabul eder.

Forge (also called node-forge) is a native implementation of Transport Layer Security in JavaScript. Prior to 1.4.1, node-forge did not validate the AES-GCM tagLength option passed to start() during decryption through forge.cipher.createDecipher(). When an application derived tagLength from received data or used an unset or zero-like configuration value, a value that converted to zero together with an empty or missing authentication tag caused the calculated and supplied tags to compare as empty, so decipher.finish() accepted unauthenticated ciphertext. Applications that omit tagLength to use the 128-bit default or pass a fixed valid tag length are unaffected. This issue is fixed in version 1.4.1.

Patch and Remediation Guide

Solution & Remediation Advisory

Patch status unknown

İncelenen resmî kaynaklarda yama durumu doğrulanamadı. Bu sonuç “yama yok” anlamına gelmez.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
