Short explanation

The pem.decode function in digitalbazaar forge uses polynomial-time regular expressions, allowing unauthenticated attackers to supply long malformed PEM inputs, consume excessive CPU resources, and cause a denial of service.

Why does it matter?

Remote unauthenticated attackers can supply malicious PEM inputs to applications, leading to service disruption and directly threatening system availability.

What should be done?

  • Update the package to version 1.4.1 or later
  • Follow vendor advisories
Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

Show the technical text from the sources

Forge (also called node-forge) is a native implementation of Transport Layer Security in JavaScript. Prior to 1.4.1, the affected implementation used pem.decode(), lib/pem.js, missing END line to process the relevant input or security decision. node-forge used polynomial-time regular expressions in pem.decode(), including when searching for a matching END line and parsing encapsulated headers. An unauthenticated attacker able to supply PEM input to any high-level parser could consume excessive CPU with a long malformed message and cause denial of service. This issue is fixed in version 1.4.1.

Patch and Remediation Guide

Solution & Remediation Advisory

Patch status unknown

İncelenen resmî kaynaklarda yama durumu doğrulanamadı. Bu sonuç “yama yok” anlamına gelmez.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
