Denial of Service Vulnerability in Go JOSE

Short explanation

A denial of service vulnerability exists in the Go JOSE library due to improper handling of empty ciphertext buffers during the decryption of untrusted JWE ciphertexts.

Why does it matter?

Attackers can trigger application crashes and service outages by sending maliciously crafted ciphertexts using specific encryption algorithms.

What should be done?

  • Update the Go JOSE library to version 4.1.5 or later
  • Follow vendor advisories if an immediate upgrade is not possible
Chain of evidence and sources3 verified claims

Go JOSE 4.1.5 öncesi sürümler, boş tampon belleklerin CBC-HMAC dolgu çıkarma işlemine iletilmesine izin verir.

Yetersiz doğrulama, boş tamponun dizinlenmesine ve bir panik ile servis dışı bırakmaya yol açar.

Bu sorun 4.1.5 sürümünde giderilmiştir.

Show the technical text from the sources

Go JOSE provides an implementation of the Javascript Object Signing and Encryption set of standards in Go, including support for JSON Web Encryption (JWE), JSON Web Signature (JWS), and JSON Web Token (JWT) standards. Prior to 4.1.5, decrypting untrusted JWE ciphertext with A128CBC-HS256, A192CBC-HS384, or A256CBC-HS512 can pass an empty ciphertext buffer to CBC-HMAC unpadding. Insufficient validation allows the empty buffer to be indexed, causing a panic and denial of service. Applications that decrypt attacker-controlled ciphertext with one of these content-encryption algorithms are affected. This issue is fixed in version 4.1.5.

Patch and Remediation Guide

Solution & Remediation Advisory

Patch status unknown

İncelenen resmî kaynaklarda yama durumu doğrulanamadı. Bu sonuç “yama yok” anlamına gelmez.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
