Short explanation

Sonatype Nexus Repository 3 contains a privilege escalation vulnerability because it does not require realm administration permission when creating a Rut Auth capability. Users with only capability creation permission can enable header-based authentication, allowing remote clients to authenticate as administrators without credentials.

Why does it matter?

This vulnerability allows a low-privileged user to authenticate as an administrator or existing user without credentials, creating a serious risk of system compromise.

What should be done?

  • Follow vendor advisories and patch recommendations
  • Update Nexus Repository 3 to the latest version

Sonatype Nexus Repository 3 does not require realm administration permission when a user creates a Rut Auth capability. A user who holds only the capability creation permission (nexus:capabilities:create) can create this capability, which turns on header-based authentication for the instance. A remote client can then authenticate as an existing user, including an administrator, without credentials.
