Short explanation

Netgate pfSense CE through version 2.9.0 contains a local file read vulnerability allowing users with Dynamic DNS client privileges to read files as root.

Why does it matter?

It matters because it allows authorized attackers to extract sensitive system files by logging them into the system log. The patch status could not be verified from the reviewed official sources.

What should be done?

  • Follow vendor advisories to apply available updates
  • Audit and restrict Dynamic DNS client privileges tightly
  • Monitor system logs for unauthorized file read attempts

Show the technical text from the sources

Netgate pfSense CE through 2.9.0 contains a local file read vulnerability that allows users with the Dynamic DNS client privilege to read files as root by setting a file:// custom Update URL in services_dyndns_edit.php. Attackers can set a non-matching Result Match string so _checkStatus() logs file contents such as /conf/config.xml or /etc/master.passwd to the system log.

Solution & Remediation Advisory

Patch status unknown

İncelenen resmî kaynaklarda yama durumu doğrulanamadı. Bu sonuç “yama yok” anlamına gelmez.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
