Short explanation
Netgate pfSense CE through version 2.9.0 contains a php.ini injection vulnerability due to an unvalidated timezone value. Authenticated users with General Setup privileges can execute PHP as root after php.ini is regenerated during a reboot or php-fpm restart.
Exploitation of this vulnerability by an authenticated attacker allows manipulation of core configurations, leading to the potential elevation of privileges to root on the target system.
What should be done?
- Follow vendor advisories and updates
- Monitor and restrict inputs within timezone configurations
