Short explanation
CVE-2026-99238 in the Linux kernel occurs due to insufficient locking mechanisms within the tracing module. Failing to hold the trace_types_lock during module notifications, combined with concurrent removal operations, can lead to accessing freed memory regions.
This vulnerability allows a local attacker to cause critical impacts on confidentiality, integrity, and availability with elevated privileges.
What should be done?
- Follow vendor advisories and updates
- Apply the corresponding kernel patches
- Review module loading policies
The sources give limited detail on some technical conditions. Review the chain of evidence below before deciding how to act.
Chain of evidence and sources
CVE-2026-99238, Linux çekirdeğinin tracing bileşenini etkilemektedir.
Zafiyet, modül bildirimleri sırasında trace_types_lock kilidinin tutulmamasından kaynaklanır.
Show the technical text from the sources
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tracing: Hold trace_types_lock when updating modules in persistent instances trace_module_record() walks ftrace_trace_arrays from the module notifier without trace_types_lock. A concurrent rmdir of an instance removes it from the list and frees it under that lock, so a module load or unload can walk into a freed trace_array.
