Short explanation

In Pillow versions 5.1.0 through 13.0.0, PdfParser.linearize_page_tree() treats a PDF /Pages graph as a tree without tracking duplicate indirect references. When Image.save() processes a crafted PDF with append=True, it can trigger excessive CPU consumption and resource exhaustion.

Why does it matter?

This vulnerability allows attackers to cause high CPU consumption and service disruption on target systems by supplying maliciously crafted PDF files.

What should be done?

  • Monitor vendor advisories for updates
  • Verify the versions of the affected library in use
Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

Pillow 5.1.0 ile 13.0.0 sürümleri arasındaki PdfParser.linearize_page_tree() işlevi, PDF /Pages grafiğini yinelenen dolaylı referansları izlemeden işler.

Image.save(..., format='PDF', append=True) fonksiyonu, saldırgan tarafından kontrol edilen ve yinelenen düğümler içeren PDF'ler işlendiğinde aşırı kaynak tüketimine yol açar.

Show the technical text from the sources

Pillow is a Python imaging library. From 5.1.0 until 13.0.0, PdfParser.linearize_page_tree() in src/PIL/PdfParser.py treats a PDF /Pages graph as a tree without tracking duplicate indirect references. When Image.save(..., format="PDF", append=True) processes an attacker-controlled existing PDF whose /Kids arrays repeatedly reference the same child /Pages node, Pillow expands the shared subtree as distinct pages. A compact malformed PDF can therefore create exponentially many page references and consume disproportionate CPU before the append completes. This issue is fixed in version 13.0.0.
