Short explanation
A vulnerability in Splunk Enterprise allows a user without admin or power roles to derive the PostgreSQL sidecar database superuser password and execute arbitrary operating system commands on search head cluster members.
This security flaw allows low-privileged users to obtain database passwords and run commands under the account running Splunk Enterprise, compromising system security.
What should be done?
- Review the official Splunk advisory documentation
- Update Splunk Enterprise versions
- Verify role-based user access configurations
Chain of evidence and sources
Splunk Enterprise sürümlerinde, admin veya power rolleri olmayan bir kullanıcı PostgreSQL sidecar veritabanı superuser şifresini türetebilir.
PostgreSQL sidecar servisi, ayrıcalıklı bir veritabanı parolasını arama işi günlüklerinde görünen arama başlığı kümesi tanımlayıcısından türetir.
Show the technical text from the sources
In Splunk Enterprise versions below 10.4.4 and 10.2.8, a user who does not hold the "admin" or "power" Splunk roles could derive the PostgreSQL sidecar database superuser password and run arbitrary operating system commands as the user account running Splunk Enterprise on search head cluster members. The vulnerability is possible because the PostgreSQL sidecar service derives a privileged database password from the search head cluster identifier that appears in search job logs.
