Short explanation
Prior to version 9.6.0, the Gradle Shadow plugin does not independently validate ZIP entry names before writing them to its output archive. This allows a malicious dependency to preserve traversal entry names, enabling attacker-controlled files to be written outside the intended destination if extracted without protection.
This vulnerability introduces a Zip Slip path traversal flaw that allows unauthorized file writing actions on target environments. Upgrading Gradle alone does not prevent this behavior.
What should be done?
- Upgrade shadow to version 9.6.0 or later
- Follow vendor advisories
Chain of evidence and sources
Gradle Shadow 9.6.0 öncesi sürümlerde ZIP girdi adlarını bağımsız olarak doğrulamamaktadır.
Kötü amaçlı bir bağımlılık, arşiv işleme yolu reddetmediğinde gezinme girdilerinin korunmasına neden olabilir.
Bu sorun 9.6.0 sürümünde giderilmiştir.
Show the technical text from the sources
The Gradle Shadow plugin creates fat or uber JARs and supports file transformation and package relocation. Prior to version 9.6.0, Shadow does not independently validate ZIP entry names before writing them to its output archive. A malicious dependency can cause traversal entry names to be preserved when the applicable archive-processing path does not reject them. Some affected Shadow implementations process dependency archives directly, so upgrading Gradle alone does not universally prevent this behavior. If the resulting archive is extracted without path traversal protection, attacker-controlled files can be written outside the intended destination. This issue is fixed in version 9.6.0.
