Short explanation

A vulnerability in isomorphic-git allows server-supplied circular symbolic references to persist, causing operations like log, status, checkout, and branch to fail to terminate, resulting in a persistent denial of service (DoS).

Why does it matter?

This vulnerability poses a persistent denial of service risk, allowing attackers or man-in-the-middle actors to render repositories unusable for applications through malicious remote repositories.

What should be done?

  • Update to version 1.38.6 or later
  • Follow vendor advisories
Chain of evidence and sources3 verified claims

Show the technical text from the sources

isomorphic-git is a pure JavaScript implementation of Git for Node.js and browsers. Prior to 1.38.6, isomorphic-git persists server-supplied circular symref= capabilities through updateRemoteRefs, and GitRefManager.resolve() follows the resulting loose symbolic references without a default depth limit or cycle detection. After a clone from a malicious or man-in-the-middle-controlled remote, operations such as log, status, checkout, and branch that resolve refs/remotes/origin/a or refs/remotes/origin/b do not terminate. The circular references remain on disk, leaving the repository unusable for the application and causing a persistent denial of service. This issue is fixed in version 1.38.6.

Patch and Remediation Guide

Solution & Remediation Advisory

Patch status unknown

İncelenen resmî kaynaklarda yama durumu doğrulanamadı. Bu sonuç “yama yok” anlamına gelmez.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
