Short explanation

OpenPrinting CUPS allows the scheduler running with root privileges to read and copy sensitive file bytes into a job-sheet spool object by using attacker-controlled IPP attributes in scheduler/ipp.c.

Why does it matter?

This vulnerability can lead to file disclosure, allowing attackers to transmit sensitive data through the scheduler's file system access to observable endpoints.

What should be done?

  • Upgrade to version 2.4.20 or later
  • Follow the vendor advisory
Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

OpenPrinting CUPS 2.4.20 öncesi sürümlerde, scheduler/ipp.c içindeki copy_banner fonksiyonu saldırgan kontrollü girdileri dizin bileşeni olarak kullanır.

Saldırganlar root planlayıcının dosyayı açmasını sağlayarak baytların bir iş nesnesine kopyalanmasına neden olabilir.

Show the technical text from the sources

OpenPrinting CUPS is an open source printing system for Linux and other Unix-like operating systems. Prior to 2.4.20, copy_banner() in scheduler/ipp.c uses the attacker-controlled IPP attributes-natural-language value as a directory component beneath DataDir/banners when processing a job-sheets banner. The job-sheets value must first match a registered banner basename, and the traversed path must contain a matching reachable basename; selecting an arbitrary target as demonstrated additionally requires pre-positioned path state such as a symlink with that basename. Subject to the scheduler's filesystem and sandbox access, path separators in the language value can escape the intended banner directory, make the root scheduler open the reachable file, and copy its bytes into a job-sheet spool object that a configured backend can deliver to an attacker-observable endpoint. This issue is fixed in version 2.4.20.

Patch and Remediation Guide

Solution & Remediation Advisory

Patch status unknown

İncelenen resmî kaynaklarda yama durumu doğrulanamadı. Bu sonuç “yama yok” anlamına gelmez.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
