Short explanation

Picotls contains a vulnerability during the handshake when running as a client, causing a NULL pointer dereference that leads to a denial of service.

Why does it matter?

This vulnerability allows an attacker to terminate the consuming process through crafted messages, disrupting operations and causing a denial of service.

What should be done?

  • Follow the vendor advisory for guidance
  • Apply the fix provided in the commit
  • Review client-side configurations
Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

Show the technical text from the sources

Picotls is a TLS protocol library that allows users select different crypto backends based on their use case. In affected revisions through 44bc503, when picotls is used as a `client-side TLS stack`, a peer can send a `HelloRetryRequest` followed by a `spoofed Hello message` that causes a null-pointer dereference. This can terminate the consuming process, including a process performing other work, resulting in denial of service. This issue is fixed in commit a06ca41.
