Short explanation
Versions of Part-DB prior to 2.12.1 contain a fixed APP_SECRET in the .env file; Symfony uses this value to sign remember‑me cookies. An attacker who obtains the secret can craft a forged cookie and gain a fully authenticated session without credentials.
A forged cookie lets an attacker obtain a fully authenticated session without credential checks, increasing the risk of unauthorized access.
What should be done?
- Replace the hard‑coded APP_SECRET with a random secret
- Override the secret via environment variable when launching the Docker image
- Upgrade Part‑DB to version 2.12.1 or later (patch status unknown, follow vendor advisory)
- Remove hard‑coded secrets from the source repository
- Configure Symfony to set kernel.secret dynamically
The sources give limited detail on some technical conditions. Review the chain of evidence below before deciding how to act.
Chain of evidence and sources
Part-DB 2.12.1 öncesi sürümlerde .env dosyasında sabit APP_SECRET bulunur ve bu, remember‑me çerezlerinin imzalanmasında kullanılır.
Bu sabit APP_SECRET bilindiğinde saldırgan sahte remember‑me çerezi üreterek kimlik doğrulama gerektirmeden tam oturum elde edebilir.
Resmi kaynaklarda yama durumu doğrulanmadığı için, güncelleme mevcut olsa da yamanın varlığı kesin değildir.
Show the technical text from the sources
Part-DB is an open source inventory management system for electronic components. Prior to version 2.12.1, the file .env committed in the Part-DB repository contains a fixed value for APP_SECRET (a03498528f5a5fc089273ec9ae5b2849). The official Docker image jbtronics/part-db1 does not override or randomize this value at container start-up. Because Symfony uses APP_SECRET (via kernel.secret) as the HMAC key for signing remember-me cookies, any attacker who knows the secret -- or fetches it from the public repository -- can forge an arbitrary-user remember-me cookie and gain a fully authenticated session with no credentials required. This issue has been patched in version 2.12.1.
