Short explanation
Prior to version 26.05, Goobi viewer generates a predictable replacement password during password resets. Insufficient entropy allows attackers to brute-force the password by approximating the server-side generation time, leading to account takeover.
This vulnerability allows attackers to exploit the password reset mechanism, compromise user accounts, and breach authentication integrity.
What should be done?
- Follow the vendor advisory.
- Update goobi-viewer-core to version 26.05 or later
Chain of evidence and sources
Goobi viewer 26.05 öncesi sürümlerde şifre sıfırlama sırasında öngörülebilir yedek parola üretilmektedir.
Yetersiz entropi, saldırganların sunucu üretim zamanını tahmin ederek parolayı kaba kuvvet saldırısıyla çözmesine olanak tanır.
Show the technical text from the sources
The Goobi viewer is a web application that allows digitised material to be displayed in a web browser. Prior to version 26.05, when a password reset link is visited, the application generates a replacement password in a predictable way and emails it to the account holder. The insufficient entropy allows the password to be brute-forced by an attacker who can approximate the server-side generation time. Exploiting this finding in isolation requires the victim to have triggered the reset themselves and the attacker to infer the server time from network or email metadata. This issue has been patched in version 26.05.
