Short explanation

OpenEMR before version 8.3.0 contains an insecure direct object reference vulnerability in portal/lib/paylib.php, allowing authenticated portal patients to modify other patients' billing records [S0].

Why does it matter?

This flaw allows authenticated portal users to submit requests that insert or modify forged payment-audit records within other patients' billing records, compromising data integrity [S0].

What should be done?

  • Follow the vendor advisory for updates
  • Upgrade OpenEMR to version 8.3.0 or later
  • Monitor portal requests and payment audit trails
Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

Show the technical text from the sources

OpenEMR before 8.3.0 contains an insecure direct object reference in portal/lib/paylib.php, which writes the request-supplied form_pid (or the patient_id_cc value in Sphere data) to onsite_portal_activity without checking it against the session patient. Authenticated portal patients can submit portal-save, review-save, AuthorizeNet, Stripe, or Sphere requests to insert or modify forged payment-audit records in other patients' billing records.
