Hickory DNS DNSSEC Validation Cache Poisoning Vulnerability

Short explanation

A logic bug in Hickory DNS components causes transient DS lookup errors to be cached as Bogus DNSSEC validation verdicts. An attacker who induces a SERVFAIL, REFUSED, or timeout response to a child-zone DS sub-query can cause the validator to return SERVFAIL for all names under that zone until the cache entry's TTL expires.

Why does it matter?

This vulnerability allows attackers to manipulate the DNSSEC validation mechanism, leading to denial of service (SERVFAIL) and availability loss for targeted domain names.

What should be done?

  • Monitor patch status through official channels

Show the technical text from the sources

Hickory DNS hickory-proto 0.25.0-alpha.1 through 0.26.0-alpha.1 and hickory-net before 0.26.2 contain a logic bug in DnssecDnsHandle's DS-fetch path that caches transient DS lookup errors as Bogus DNSSEC validation verdicts. An attacker who induces a SERVFAIL, REFUSED, or timeout response to a child-zone DS sub-query causes the validator to return SERVFAIL for all names under that zone until the cache entry's TTL expires.

Patch and Remediation Guide

Solution & Remediation Advisory

Patch status unknown

İncelenen resmî kaynaklarda yama durumu doğrulanamadı. Bu sonuç “yama yok” anlamına gelmez.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
