Short explanation
OpenAM versions prior to 16.1.4 lack proper encoding of attribute values in the SAML 1.x Form POST flow, allowing a trusted identity provider to inject crafted attribute names or values that reach the target application in modified form, compromising attribute integrity.
Loss of attribute integrity can affect authentication and authorization decisions, potentially enabling unauthorized access.
What should be done?
- Upgrade to OpenAM 16.1.4 or later
- Monitor vendor security advisories
- Consider disabling SAML 1.x if not required
- Validate and properly encode received attributes

Chain of evidence and sources
Show the technical text from the sources
OpenAM before 16.1.4 contains an incomplete output encoding vulnerability that allows a SAML 1.x identity provider to alter attribute values by injecting unencoded content into the service provider auto-submitted form. Attackers controlling a trusted identity provider can craft assertion attribute names or values that reach the target application in modified form, undermining the integrity of received attributes.
