Tornado < 6.6 Cookie Attribute Injection via set_cookie max_age

Short explanation

Tornado versions prior to 6.6 do not validate the max_age argument of RequestHandler.set_cookie (and related methods), allowing an attacker to inject additional Set‑Cookie attributes such as Domain, Path, or Secure into max_age. This can broaden the cookie’s scope to parent paths or other subdomains.

Why does it matter?

Broadening cookie scope can lead to session cookie theft or unauthorized access.

What should be done?

  • Upgrade to Tornado 6.6 or later
  • Apply vendor‑provided advisory when available
  • Validate max_age values before calling set_cookie
  • Monitor for suspicious Set‑Cookie headers

Chain of evidence and sources4 verified claims

Show the technical text from the sources

Tornado before 6.6 does not validate the max_age argument of RequestHandler.set_cookie (also called by set_signed_cookie, set_secure_cookie, and clear_cookie), allowing injection of additional Set-Cookie attributes. When an application passes attacker-influenced input as max_age, an attacker can embed attributes such as Domain, Path, or Secure to widen the cookie's scope to parent paths or other subdomains.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
