Short explanation
Kyverno versions 1.11.0 through 1.19.1 contain an unbounded decompression flaw in extractStatement that lets remote attackers supply highly compressed attestation layers to exhaust memory and cause denial of service. (S0)
Memory exhaustion causes the Kyverno admission controller to crash with OOM, leading to DoS in the Kubernetes environment. (S0)
What should be done?
- Upgrade Kyverno to version 1.19.2 or later
- Monitor vendor advisories for a confirmed fix
- Limit the size of attestation layers submitted via the registry
- Set up OOM alerts for the admission controller
- Consider temporarily disabling the affected admission control rule
Chain of evidence and sources
Show the technical text from the sources
Kyverno from 1.11.0 before 1.19.2 contains an unbounded decompression vulnerability in extractStatement that allows remote attackers to exhaust memory by supplying highly compressed attestation layers. Attackers controlling registry referrer artifacts can push gzip predicate layers exceeding maxPayloadSize when decompressed, causing admission controller OOM kills and denial of service.
