Short explanation
CGI versions for Perl before 5.00 allow POSTDATA, PUTDATA, PATCHDATA, and XForms:Model parameters to be set from query strings or form fields. This prevents applications from distinguishing actual request bodies from client-supplied values, potentially leading to cross-site request forgery.
This vulnerability enables an attacker to manipulate sensitive parameters via cross-site request forgery without requiring a CORS preflight. Blurring the distinction between client input and the real request body poses significant security risks.
What should be done?
- Upgrade the CGI module to fixed versions
- Review and apply the provided patch references
- Follow vendor advisories
Chain of evidence and sources
CPANSec CGI sürümleri, 5.00 öncesinde POSTDATA ve benzeri parametrelerin sorgu dizesinden ayarlanmasına izin verir.
Uygulama istemci tarafından gönderilen değeri gerçek gövdeden ayırt edemez ve CORS ön kontrolü gerektirmeyen istek sahteciliğine açık hale gelir.
Show the technical text from the sources
CGI versions before 5.00 for Perl allow the POSTDATA, PUTDATA, PATCHDATA and XForms:Model parameters to be set from the query string or form fields. CGI stores a non-form request body under POSTDATA, PUTDATA or PATCHDATA, and an XForms body under XForms:Model, but also accepts these names from the query string, a form field or a multipart part, so an application cannot tell a client-sent value from the real body. A cross-site HTML form can post POSTDATA={"admin":true} to an endpoint that reads JSON from param('POSTDATA'), a request forgery that needs no CORS preflight.
