Short explanation

python-jose through version 3.5.0 contains an authentication bypass vulnerability allowing unauthenticated attackers to forge JWTs because HMACKey and CryptographyHMACKey accept zero-length HMAC secrets. When verification keys resolve to empty, attackers can forge tokens with arbitrary claims accepted by jwt.decode.

Why does it matter?

This critical vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to bypass JWT verification when keys resolve to empty, leading to severe compromise of application authentication.

What should be done?

  • Follow vendor advisories for patching guidance
  • Ensure application key configurations do not resolve to empty values
  • Keep python-jose updated
Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

python-jose 3.5.0 ve önceki sürümler, HMACKey ve CryptographyHMACKey bileşenlerinin sıfır uzunluklu HMAC sırlarını kabul etmesi nedeniyle kimlik doğrulama atlatma açığı barındırmaktadır.

Doğrulama anahtarının boş çözümlendiği durumlarda, saldırganlar jwt.decode tarafından kabul edilen sahte JWT'ler oluşturabilir.

When an application's HS256/HS384/HS512 verification key resolves to empty, such as an oct JWK with empty k, attackers can forge tokens with arbitrary claims that jwt.decode accepts.

Solution & Remediation Advisory

Patch status unknown

İncelenen resmî kaynaklarda yama durumu doğrulanamadı. Bu sonuç “yama yok” anlamına gelmez.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
