Short explanation

Tesseract versions 5.4.0 through 5.5.4 contain a double free and use after free vulnerability in the PAGE XML renderer on right-to-left pages, allowing corrupted coordinates to propagate.

Why does it matter?

This vulnerability enables local disruption and memory corruption during optical character recognition tasks involving right-to-left scripts.

What should be done?

  • Follow vendor advisories and security updates
  • Update to fixed releases when available
  • Review OCR parsing configurations
Note on uncertainty

The sources give limited detail on some technical conditions. Review the chain of evidence below before deciding how to act.

Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

Tesseract 5.4.0 ile 5.5.4 sürümleri arasında AppendLinePolygon fonksiyonu bellek akümülatörünü yok ederek askıda kalan işaretçiler bırakır.

Sağdan sola yazılan sayfalarda gerçekleşen bu hata double free ve use after free durumlarına yol açar.

Show the technical text from the sources

Tesseract is an open source OCR engine. From 5.4.0 until 5.5.4, AppendLinePolygon in src/api/pagerenderer.cpp destroys the caller-owned right-to-left Pta accumulator while receiving it by value, leaving line_top_rtl_pts and line_bottom_rtl_pts dangling. On an upright Hebrew or Arabic page at the default PAGE XML level, POLYGONFLAG with a false skewed_flag enters the vulnerable calls, while LEVELFLAG greater than zero provides an alternative gate. The calls repeatedly read and free the stale object, causing a double free and use after free and allowing corrupted coordinates to reach RecalcPolygonline. This issue is fixed in version 5.5.4.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
