CVE-2026-119189: Forge verifyCertificateChain() Certificate Chain Validation Vulnerability

Short explanation

The verifyCertificateChain() function in Forge (node-forge) does not enforce basicConstraints.pathLenConstraint on CA certificates lacking the keyUsage extension. This allows attackers to construct certificate chains exceeding the declared path length [S0].

Why does it matter?

This vulnerability can lead to the bypassing of certificate chain constraints within private PKI environments, paving the way for integrity violations [S0].

What should be done?

  • Upgrade to version 1.4.1 or later [S0].
  • Follow vendor advisories if an immediate upgrade is not possible [S0].
Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

Forge kütüphanesinin 1.4.1 öncesi sürümlerinde pathLenConstraint kontrolü yalnızca keyUsage uzantısı taşıyan CA sertifikalarında uygulanmaktadır.

Saldırganlar, yol uzunluğu kısıtlı ve keyUsage içermeyen bir CA üzerinden izin verilen uzunluğu aşan zincirler oluşturabilir.

Show the technical text from the sources

Forge (also called node-forge) is a native implementation of Transport Layer Security in JavaScript. Prior to 1.4.1, node-forge enforced an X.509 CA certificate's basicConstraints.pathLenConstraint only when that certificate also carried a keyUsage extension. Exploitation requires a path-length-constrained CA without keyUsage that chains to a root trusted by the application, and an attacker who holds that CA's private key or obtains a subordinate CA certificate from it. The attacker could then construct a chain exceeding the declared path length that still passed pki.verifyCertificateChain(). Public web PKI CA certificates normally include keyUsage; private PKIs with CA certificates created without it are more likely to be affected. This issue is fixed in version 1.4.1.

Patch and Remediation Guide

Solution & Remediation Advisory

Patch status unknown

İncelenen resmî kaynaklarda yama durumu doğrulanamadı. Bu sonuç “yama yok” anlamına gelmez.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
