Short explanation

Forge is a native TLS implementation in JavaScript. In versions prior to 1.4.1, pki.verifyCertificateChain() can permanently remove trusted CA certificates with the same subject from the CA store. This creates a persistent availability impact for applications reusing the store.

Why does it matter?

A failed chain verification can permanently remove trusted CA certificates, causing subsequent valid chains to fail and creating persistent availability issues in applications.

What should be done?

  • Upgrade to version 1.4.1 or later
  • Follow vendor advisories
Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

Show the technical text from the sources

Forge (also called node-forge) is a native implementation of Transport Layer Security in JavaScript. Prior to 1.4.1, the affected implementation used pki.verifyCertificateChain(), pki.createCaStore(), duplicate subject names to process the relevant input or security decision. node-forge modified the CA store while trying certificates that shared a subject name during pki.verifyCertificateChain(). A failed chain verification could permanently remove trusted CA certificates from the store, causing later valid chains to fail and creating a persistent availability impact for applications that reused the store. This issue is fixed in version 1.4.1.

Patch and Remediation Guide

Solution & Remediation Advisory

Patch status unknown

İncelenen resmî kaynaklarda yama durumu doğrulanamadı. Bu sonuç “yama yok” anlamına gelmez.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
