Short explanation

A vulnerability in the Python binding of the Botan C++ cryptography library causes bcrypt and check_bcrypt APIs to truncate passwords containing embedded NUL characters, leading to application password-policy bypass.

Why does it matter?

This vulnerability allows attackers to validate a longer password while hashing a shorter effective value, enabling the bypass of application password policies. There is no active exploitation status reported.

What should be done?

  • Upgrading to version 3.13.0 or later
  • Following vendor advisories due to uncertainty in patch status
Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

Botan Python bağlantıları gömülü NUL içeren parolaları kırparak politika atlatılmasına yol açar.

Etkilenen sürümler 1.11.22 ile 3.13.0 arasındadır ve scrypt ile argon2 etkilenmemektedir.

Show the technical text from the sources

Botan is a C++ cryptography library. From 1.11.22 until 3.13.0, Botan's Python binding converted Python strings containing U+0000 to const char* values without consistently rejecting the embedded NUL, causing bcrypt and check_bcrypt to process only the prefix before the NUL. Applications could validate a longer password but hash a shorter effective value, allowing application password-policy bypass; scrypt and argon2 are unaffected. This issue is fixed in version 3.13.0.
