Short explanation
Thunderbird does not validate the homeserver address provided in the server's login response when logging into a Matrix account [S0]. A malicious or compromised homeserver can provide a file: URL, redirecting session requests to local files or an attacker-controlled network share on Windows, leaking NTLM credentials [S0].
It can lead to the leakage of NTLM credentials via network shares for Thunderbird users running on Windows [S0].
What should be done?
- Follow official Mozilla security advisories [S0]
Chain of evidence and sources
Thunderbird, Matrix oturum açma işleminde sunucu adresini doğrulamamaktadır [S0].
Saldırı Windows üzerinde NTLM kimlik bilgisi sızıntısına neden olabilir [S0].
Show the technical text from the sources
When logging in to a Matrix account, Thunderbird used the homeserver address provided in the server's login response without validating it. A malicious or compromised homeserver could provide a file: URL, causing Thunderbird to send all further Matrix requests of that session to local files or, on Windows, to an attacker-controlled network share, which could leak the user's NTLM credentials. The NTLM credential leak only affects Thunderbird on Windows. Other operating systems are unaffected. This vulnerability was fixed in Thunderbird 159 and Thunderbird 153.6.
