Short explanation

A vulnerability in the zip library for Rust allows attackers to trigger process abortion and denial of service due to unbounded memory allocation during symbolic link target handling.

Why does it matter?

This vulnerability can cause repeated denial of service in archive-processing applications, and the failure cannot be contained with catch_unwind or worker threads.

What should be done?

  • Follow vendor advisories
  • Update the library

Bu sorun sürüm 9.0.0 ile giderilmiştir.

Show the technical text from the sources

zip is a zip library for Rust that supports reading and writing simple ZIP files. From 1.3.0 until 9.0.0, ZipArchive::extract in src/read/mod.rs calls Vec::with_capacity for a symbolic link target using the attacker-controlled ZIP64 uncompressed_size before reading entry data. A small archive can request an impossible capacity, causing the infallible allocation path to abort the process before the entry is validated. The failure cannot be contained with catch_unwind or a worker thread, allowing repeated denial of service in archive-processing applications. This issue is fixed in version 9.0.0.

Patch and Remediation Guide

Solution & Remediation Advisory

Patch status unknown

İncelenen resmî kaynaklarda yama durumu doğrulanamadı. Bu sonuç “yama yok” anlamına gelmez.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
