Short explanation
A vulnerability in virtualenv causes the bash bin/activate script to copy the --prompt value into PS1 without escaping. Commands can be executed under the context of the user activating the environment.
This vulnerability allows attackers to execute commands with the privileges of the user who activates the environment. It poses severe risks to confidentiality, integrity, and availability due to its high CVSS score.
What should be done?
- Follow vendor advisories and apply available updates.
- Avoid using affected versions and upgrade to secure releases.
- Review input validation practices during environment script executions.
Chain of evidence and sources
virtualenv 21.14.9 ile 21.14.13 sürümleri arasında bash bin/activate betiği --prompt değerini PS1 içine kaçış yapmadan kopyalar.
Söz konusu güvenlik açığı 7.1 taban CVSS puanına ve HIGH önem derecesine sahiptir.
Show the technical text from the sources
virtualenv is a tool for creating isolated virtual python environments. From 21.14.9 until 21.14.13, the bash bin/activate script can copy an attacker-controlled --prompt value into PS1 without escaping dollar signs or backticks when both promptvars and POSIX mode are disabled during activation. Re-enabling promptvars, running set -o posix, or starting an interactive child bash that inherits the exported PS1 can then expand command substitution in the stored VIRTUAL_ENV_PROMPT value and execute commands as the user who activates the environment. This issue is fixed in version 21.14.13.
