Resource Allocation Without Limits Vulnerability in Roundcube Webmail

Short explanation

Roundcube Webmail versions contain a vulnerability where ImageMagick resource limits can be bypassed during thumbnail generation. Because available-memory checks were limited to Windows, other platforms could process crafted images without limits and exhaust server memory.

Why does it matter?

This vulnerability allows attackers to exhaust server resources through specially crafted large images, potentially leading to service disruptions.

What should be done?

  • Update Roundcube Webmail to versions 1.6.20, 1.7.5, or later
  • Follow the vendor advisory for official updates
Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

Roundcube Webmail 1.6.20 ve 1.7.5 öncesi sürümlerde ImageMagick kaynak sınırları atlanabilmektedir.

Bellek kontrolü yalnızca Windows üzerinde uygulandığı için diğer platformlarda bellek tükenmesi riski oluşmaktadır.

Show the technical text from the sources

Roundcube Webmail before 1.6.20 and 1.7.x before 1.7.5 allows the ImageMagick resource limits to be bypassed during thumbnail generation. When rcube_image falls back to GD, the available-memory check was applied only on Windows, so on other platforms a crafted image with large dimensions was processed by GD without any resource limit and could exhaust server memory. Upstream fixed this in the commit “Fix ImageMagick resource limits bypass by GD fallback during thumbnail generation”, which applies the memory check on all platforms.
