Short explanation

The dns.name.from_wire_parser function in dnspython follows compression pointer chains in malicious DNS messages without a limit, leading to excessive CPU usage and denial of service.

Why does it matter?

Applications processing untrusted DNS messages can be rendered unavailable due to maliciously crafted data sent by attackers.

What should be done?

  • Update to version 2.9.0 or later
  • Follow vendor advisory guidance
Note on uncertainty

The sources give limited detail on some technical conditions. Review the chain of evidence below before deciding how to act.

Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

dnspython 2.9.0 öncesi sürümlerde dns.name.from_wire_parser işlevi atlama sınırı olmaksızın sıkıştırma işaretçi zincirlerini takip eder.

Kötü amaçlı DNS mesajları yüksek CPU kullanımına veya hizmet reddine neden olabilir.

Show the technical text from the sources

dnspython is a DNS toolkit for Python. Prior to 2.9.0, dns.name.from_wire_parser follows attacker-controlled DNS compression pointer chains without a hop limit. A malicious DNS wire-format message can force excessive pointer traversal during name decompression, causing high CPU use, application degradation, or denial of service in applications that process untrusted DNS messages. This issue is fixed in version 2.9.0.

Patch and Remediation Guide

Solution & Remediation Advisory

Patch status unknown

İncelenen resmî kaynaklarda yama durumu doğrulanamadı. Bu sonuç “yama yok” anlamına gelmez.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
