Short explanation

Contact Form 7 plugin versions prior to 6.2.4 do not validate file type or extension and have incomplete temporary‑file cleanup, allowing unauthenticated users to upload arbitrary files. On default Debian/Ubuntu Apache the uploaded file can be executed, leading to remote code execution; other configurations may serve malicious content.

Why does it matter?

An attacker can execute code or serve malicious content on the vulnerable WordPress site, compromising system integrity and confidentiality.

What should be done?

  • Update the plugin to version 6.2.4 or later
  • Enforce strict file type and extension validation
  • Disable directory listing in the web server
  • Prevent execution of uploaded files
  • Monitor security advisories for updates
Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

Contact Form 7 6.2 < 6.2.4 sürümleri, yetkisiz kullanıcıların geçersiz UTF‑8 dosya adıyla rastgele dosya yüklemesine izin verir (S0, S1).

Varsayılan Debian/Ubuntu Apache yapılandırmasında, yüklenen dosya yürütülebilir ve uzaktan kod yürütmeye (RCE) yol açabilir (S0, S1).

Show the technical text from the sources

The Contact Form 7 WordPress plugin before 6.2.4 does not validate the type or extension of files uploaded through a form file field, and a flaw in its temporary-file cleanup leaves the uploaded file on disk, allowing unauthenticated users to upload arbitrary files to the site. On a stock Debian or Ubuntu Apache configuration, which lists directory contents and maps .phar to the PHP handler, the stored file can be located and executed, leading to Remote Code Execution. On other configurations, including nginx and Apache with .htaccess overrides enabled, the issue is limited to an arbitrary file written into the uploads directory, which may still be served as active content such as HTML or SVG from the site's own origin.
