Short explanation

In pypa virtualenv prior to version 21.14.2, a command injection vulnerability exists in the activate.fish script due to differing character interpretation rules in FishActivator.

Why does it matter?

When users source the vulnerable activate.fish script, attackers can execute commands to achieve high impact on the system.

What should be done?

  • Upgrade to version 21.14.2 or later
  • Follow vendor security advisories
  • Avoid sourcing scripts from untrusted environments
Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

virtualenv 21.14.2 öncesi sürümlerde FishActivator, POSIX shlex.quote() kullanmaktadır.

Saldırgan tarafından etkilenen yol veya istem değeri komut ikamesini tetikleyebilir.

Show the technical text from the sources

virtualenv is a tool for creating isolated virtual python environments. Prior to 21.14.2, FishActivator inherits ViaTemplateActivator.quote(), which uses POSIX shlex.quote() even though fish interprets backslashes and single quotes differently. An attacker-influenced environment path, --prompt, or VIRTUALENV_PROMPT value containing a backslash before a quote can therefore terminate the generated fish literal and execute command substitution when the user sources activate.fish. This issue is fixed in version 21.14.2.

Patch and Remediation Guide

Solution & Remediation Advisory

Patch status unknown

İncelenen resmî kaynaklarda yama durumu doğrulanamadı. Bu sonuç “yama yok” anlamına gelmez.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
