Short explanation

HarfBuzz versions 8.0.0 through 14.6.0 contain an out-of-bounds write vulnerability in the experimental WebAssembly shaper due to an incorrect WAMR signature. Attackers can supply a crafted font whose wasm module places the output buffer near linear memory's end, writing glyph-name bytes into host memory to crash or corrupt applications.

Why does it matter?

This vulnerability allows attackers to manipulate host memory space and cause application crashes or data corruption by using a crafted font file. Patch references are available.

What should be done?

  • Follow the provided vendor advisory and patch references.
  • Apply the corresponding commit or pull requests.
  • Upgrade to patched and secure versions where available.
