Short explanation
ApostropheCMS versions prior to 4.33.0 do not verify authentication or ownership on PATCH and DELETE REST endpoints, allowing an unauthenticated attacker with a valid notification ID to modify or permanently delete another user's notification. The issue is fixed in version 4.33.0; the patch status is listed as UNKNOWN in official sources.
Unauthenticated modification or deletion of notifications can lead to loss of communication data and undermine trust in the CMS.
What should be done?
- Upgrade ApostropheCMS to version 4.33.0 or later
- Follow vendor guidance since patch status is UNKNOWN
- Implement authentication and ownership checks on notification endpoints
The sources give limited detail on some technical conditions. Review the chain of evidence below before deciding how to act.
Chain of evidence and sources
Show the technical text from the sources
ApostropheCMS is an open-source Node.js content management system. Prior to 4.33.0, the notification module exposes PATCH and DELETE REST endpoints that perform operations directly on the underlying MongoDB collection without verifying that the requester is authenticated or owns the target notification. As a result, an unauthenticated attacker who obtains a valid notification ID can modify or permanently delete another user's notification. This issue is fixed in version 4.33.0.
