Short explanation

Pillow versions prior to 13.0.0 contain a regular expression denial of service vulnerability in the XbmImagePlugin header parser. Calling Image.open() on a small crafted XBM file can stall a worker process for minutes.

Why does it matter?

This vulnerability allows attackers to disrupt application workers and cause a denial of service using specially crafted external XBM files.

What should be done?

  • Follow the vendor advisory for update recommendations
Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

Pillow 13.0.0 öncesi sürümlerde XBM başlık ayrıştırıcısı ReDoS zafiyetine karşı savunmasızdır.

Hazırlanmış küçük bir XBM dosyası üzerinde Image.open() çağrılması bir işçi sürecini dakikalarca durdurabilir.

Show the technical text from the sources

Pillow is a Python imaging library. Prior to 13.0.0, Pillow's XBM header parser is vulnerable to regular-expression denial of service. In XbmImageFile._open, when an application calls Image.open() on a small crafted XBM file, XbmImagePlugin applies a backtracking expression to the attacker-controlled header before image dimensions are accepted, stalling a worker for minutes and denying service. This issue is fixed in version 13.0.0.
