Short explanation
Pillow versions 12.0.0‑13.0.0 have an Image.merge function that skips validation of the first band, allowing a null pointer dereference that can crash the process via a crafted IPTC file or a direct call. The issue is fixed in version 13.0.0. Patch status is not verified in official sources (UNKNOWN).
Applications using Pillow may be taken offline by malicious image files.
What should be done?
- Upgrade Pillow to version 13.0.0 or later
- Follow the vendor advisory
- Validate image inputs before processing
Chain of evidence and sources
Image.merge işlevi, ilk bant doğrulamasını atlayarak null işaretçi erişimine yol açar ve süreci çökertir (S0, S1).
Sorun Pillow 13.0.0 sürümünde düzeltilmiştir; bu sürüme yükseltmek önerilir (S0, S1).
Show the technical text from the sources
Pillow is a Python imaging library. From 12.0.0 until 13.0.0, Pillow's Image.merge() can dereference a null image8 plane. Validation skips the first input band, allowing a 32-bit integer or floating-point image backed by image32 storage to be merged as a narrower multiband image. A crafted IPTC file can reach this path when an application opens and loads it, or a caller can invoke Image.merge() directly with such a first band. This causes a native process crash. This issue is fixed in version 13.0.0.
