Short explanation
A quadratic copying issue during GIF comment parsing in the Pillow library can lead to excessive CPU consumption and denial of service when Image.open() is invoked.
Attackers can submit specially crafted small-dimension GIF files to consume application resources and cause service disruption.
What should be done?
- Update the affected library versions
- Follow vendor security advisories and releases
Chain of evidence and sources
Pillow kütüphanesinin 5.4.0 ile 13.0.0 sürümleri arasındaki sürümleri kuadratik kopyalama hatasından etkilenmektedir.
Saldırgan, birçok yorum uzantısı içeren küçük boyutlu bir GIF göndererek Image.open() aşamasında hizmet engellemeye neden olabilir.
Show the technical text from the sources
Pillow is a Python imaging library. From 5.4.0 until 13.0.0, Pillow performs quadratic copying while parsing GIF comments. GifImageFile._seek() repeatedly appends immutable bytes for comment sub-blocks and multiple comment extensions, and frame zero is parsed during Image.open(). An attacker can submit a small-dimension GIF containing many comment extensions to any application that opens the file. This can consume excessive CPU and deny service before the application can inspect the image. This issue is fixed in version 13.0.0.
