Short explanation

libmikmod through version 3.3.15 contains a heap out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the IMF_Load() loader. This flaw allows reading beyond allocated memory by supplying a crafted IMF module, which can cause target applications to crash.

Why does it matter?

This vulnerability enables attackers to crash target applications using maliciously crafted files. The patch status cannot be reliably confirmed from official sources at this time.

What should be done?

  • Monitor vendor advisories as patch status is currently unknown
  • Avoid processing untrusted IMF files
Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

Show the technical text from the sources

libmikmod through 3.3.15 contains a heap out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the IMF_Load() loader that allows attackers to read beyond allocated memory by supplying a crafted IMF module. Attackers can enable the linear-period header flag and map notes to out-of-range samples, causing noteindex indexing far past the heap allocation and crashing applications that load the file.
