Short explanation

In libfwsi versions up to 20260522, libfwsi_mtp_volume_values_read_data contains a heap out-of-bounds read that lets attackers embed crafted MTP volume shell items in .lnk, jump list or shell bag files to read past buffer bounds and crash the consuming process.

Why does it matter?

A local attacker can cause denial of service and limited data disclosure by delivering malicious files.

What should be done?

  • Monitor libyal for updates
  • Apply vendor patch when released
  • Restrict processing of untrusted .lnk/jump list/shell bag files
  • Run affected applications in a sandbox
  • Disable parsing of these items if not needed
