Short explanation
Versions 0‑20260921 of libfsapfs contain an integer underflow in libfsapfs_key_encrypted_key_read_data that allows attackers to trigger heap out-of-bounds reads via crafted KEK attributes. This can crash tools such as fsapfsinfo, pyfsapfs, dfVFS and plaso and read adjacent memory before password checks.
Reading memory can expose sensitive data and enable further exploitation chains.
What should be done?
- Monitor libyal advisory updates
- Upgrade libfsapfs when a fix is released
- Validate and sanitize input data
- Consider alternative analysis tools
- Detect suspicious APFS files via monitoring

Show the technical text from the sources
libfsapfs through 20260921 contains an integer underflow in libfsapfs_key_encrypted_key_read_data() that allows attackers to trigger heap out-of-bounds reads via crafted KEK attributes. Attackers can supply a crafted encrypted APFS image with malformed HMAC or wrapped KEK attribute lengths to crash fsapfsinfo, pyfsapfs, dfVFS or plaso and read adjacent heap memory before password checks.
