Short explanation
CFITSIO versions up to 4.7.0 contain a heap‑based out‑of‑bounds read in imcompress.c when a zero or negative ZDITHER0 seed is processed. An attacker can supply a SUBTRACTIVE_DITHER_1 compressed FITS file and trigger crashes or memory leakage via fits_open_file() and fits_read_pix(). No active exploitation has been observed; patch status is unverified in official sources.
CFITSIO is widely used in astronomy and space data pipelines; this flaw can cause denial‑of‑service and potential leakage of sensitive data.
What should be done?
- Monitor the vendor’s security advisory
- If no patch is available, consider upgrading to an unaffected version
- Add input validation for ZDITHER0 seed values

Chain of evidence and sources
CFITSIO 4.7.0 ve öncesi, imcompress.c dosyasındaki ZDITHER0 seed işleme hatası nedeniyle heap tabanlı sınır dışı okuma içerir.
CVE, aktif istismar tespit edilmemiştir ve CISA KEV listesinde yer almamaktadır.
Resmî kaynaklarda yama durumu doğrulanamadı; durum UNKNOWN olarak rapor edilmiştir.
Show the technical text from the sources
CFITSIO through 4.7.0 contains a heap-based out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the imcompress.c unquantize helpers that allows attackers to read memory before the fits_rand_value table via a zero or negative ZDITHER0 seed. Attackers can supply a crafted FITS file with a SUBTRACTIVE_DITHER_1 compressed image, read through fits_open_file() and fits_read_pix(), to cause crashes or leak heap contents in decoded pixels.
