Short explanation

libsmb2 through version 6.2 contains a heap out-of-bounds read vulnerability in smb2_decode_file_all_info. This flaw allows malicious SMB servers or man-in-the-middle attackers to crash client applications by sending unchecked FileNameLength values.

Why does it matter?

This vulnerability is important because it allows attackers on unsigned SMB sessions or controlled servers to return crafted responses, causing client service disruption and availability loss.

What should be done?

  • Apply the provided patch references and code fixes
  • Follow vendor advisories for updates
  • Restrict unsigned sessions and connections to untrusted servers

Show the technical text from the sources

libsmb2 through 6.2 contains a heap out-of-bounds read vulnerability in smb2_decode_file_all_info that allows malicious SMB servers to crash clients by sending an unchecked FileNameLength. Attackers controlling the server or performing man-in-the-middle on unsigned sessions can return crafted FileAllInformation replies to smb2_stat or smb2_fstat calls, crashing the client.
