Short explanation

libschrift through version 0.10.2 contains a divide by zero vulnerability that allows applications to crash when supplied with a font containing a unitsPerEm value of 0 in the head table.

Why does it matter?

This vulnerability matters because attackers can leverage crafted TrueType fonts to crash target applications, leading to process termination and service disruption.

What should be done?

  • Follow vendor advisories as patch status is unknown
  • Keep the libschrift library updated
  • Validate font inputs

Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

Show the technical text from the sources

libschrift through 0.10.2 contains a divide by zero vulnerability that allows attackers to crash applications by supplying a font with unitsPerEm of 0 in the head table. Attackers can provide a crafted TrueType font whose NaN glyph coordinates bypass clip_points(), causing an out-of-bounds raster read in draw_line() during sft_render() and crashing the process.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
