Short explanation

A vulnerability in the PhpSpreadsheet library allows bypassing the XML scanner using ISO-2022 escape sequences, leading to XXE and denial of service.

Why does it matter?

Attackers can process malicious XLSX files to access sensitive local files, trigger server-side request forgery, or cause entity-expansion denial of service.

What should be done?

  • Follow vendor advisories and apply available updates.
Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

PhpSpreadsheet kütüphanesinde XmlScanner bileşeni ISO-2022 kaçış dizilerini atlayarak XXE ve hizmet engkleme riskine yol açar.

Zafiyet, PHP 8.0 öncesi sürümlerde veya LIBXML_NOENT etkin olduğunda yerel dosya erişimine ve SSRF saldırılarına izin verir.

Show the technical text from the sources

PhpSpreadsheet is a pure PHP library for reading and writing spreadsheet files. Prior to 1.30.7, 2.1.19, 2.4.8, 3.10.8, and 5.10.0, XmlScanner::scan in src/PhpSpreadsheet/Reader/Security/XmlScanner.php uses a DOCTYPE detection pattern that accounts for NUL-byte interleaving but not ISO-2022 escape sequences in XLSX XML parts. The escape sequences prevent the scanner from matching the declaration, and XML charset normalization then removes the escape bytes before parsing, exposing a valid DOCTYPE and entity definitions. Processing an attacker-controlled XLSX can therefore cause entity-expansion denial of service on supported PHP versions and can permit local file access or SSRF on PHP before 8.0 or when LIBXML_NOENT is enabled. This issue is fixed in versions 1.30.7, 2.1.19, 2.4.8, 3.10.8, and 5.10.0.

Solution & Remediation Advisory

Patch status unknown

İncelenen resmî kaynaklarda yama durumu doğrulanamadı. Bu sonuç “yama yok” anlamına gelmez.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
