Short explanation

The Gitea OpenID association callback accepts a positive OpenID 2.0 assertion without verifying that the signed-in user initiated the linking. This allows an attacker to attach their identity to a victim's account and sign in as the victim while bypassing local TOTP or WebAuthn checks. S0, S1

Why does it matter?

This flaw allows attackers to compromise accounts by leveraging a victim's active session. Bypassing local multi-factor authentication checks significantly increases the security risk. S0, S1

What should be done?

  • Follow vendor advisory guidance
  • Apply relevant updates
  • Review security settings
Note on uncertainty

The sources give limited detail on some technical conditions. Review the chain of evidence below before deciding how to act.

Show the technical text from the sources

The Gitea OpenID association callback in the security settings accepted a positive OpenID 2.0 assertion without checking that the signed-in user had started the linking. Because OpenID 2.0 allows unsolicited assertions, an attacker-controlled OpenID provider could attach the attacker's identity to the account of a signed-in victim who opened a crafted link, and the attacker could then sign in as the victim through OpenID login, which does not apply the local TOTP or WebAuthn checks. The callback now requires a time-limited `state` value bound to the user.
