Short explanation

The ALSA USB 6fire driver in the Linux kernel uses URBs embedded in different structures for PCM, MIDI, and communication. This can lead to a use-after-free (UAF) when URBs are released asynchronously.

Why does it matter?

Improper management of embedded USB request blocks creates memory integrity issues in the Linux kernel, which can lead to system instability or potential security vulnerabilities.

What should be done?

  • Follow vendor advisories and updates
  • Apply kernel updates
Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

USB 6fire sürücüsü, PCM, MIDI ve iletişim yapıları içerisinde gömülü URB'ler kullanmaktadır.

URB'lerin referans sayımı ile yönetilmesi, asenkron serbest bırakma sırasında bir UAF zafiyetine yol açabilir.

Show the technical text from the sources

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ALSA: usb: 6fire: Avoid embedded URBs The USB 6fire driver uses URBs embedded in different structs for PCM, MIDI and communication, and this is basically a buggy implementation nowadays; since a URB is managed with a refcount, this may lead to a UAF when the URB is released asynchronously. For addressing the problem, this patch converts those embedded URBs to ones that are properly allocated via usb_alloc_urb(). The pcm_urb.packets[] is gone, as it's allocated by usb_alloc_urb(), hence it's found in urb.iso_frame_desc[] instead. The conversions are rather straightforward; each embedded struct urb is changed to a pointer, and its callers are updated accordingly. The resource for those structs are released in the common destructor functions (usb6fire_comm_free(), etc), which are called at both the init error path and the disconnect. No functional changes, only compile-tested.

Solution & Remediation Advisory

Patch status unknown

İncelenen resmî kaynaklarda yama durumu doğrulanamadı. Bu sonuç “yama yok” anlamına gelmez.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
